Question Persuade Refer (QPR) – Suicide Prevention

April 9 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) is a suicide prevention training program that aims to teach individuals how to recognize the warning signs of someone who may be at risk of suicide and how to intervene effectively. The three key components of QPR represent the actions individuals can take in a crisis situation:

  1. Question: Ask the person directly if they are thinking about suicide. This step involves expressing concern and letting the person know that you are there to help. Open communication is crucial in understanding the person’s feelings and thoughts.
  2. Persuade: If the person acknowledges suicidal thoughts, the next step is to persuade them to get help. Encourage them to seek assistance from a mental health professional, a doctor, a counselor, or a trusted individual in their life. Assure them that help is available and that they don’t have to face their struggles alone.
  3. Refer: Assist the person in connecting with appropriate resources and support. This may involve providing information about local mental health services, crisis helplines, or emergency services. Helping them take the first step towards professional help is crucial for their well-being.

QPR training is designed to empower individuals to respond to signs of distress and suicide risk, much like how CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) training equips people to respond to a medical emergency. By learning and practicing QPR, individuals can play a role in preventing suicide and providing support to those in crisis.

It’s important to note that while QPR training can be valuable, it is not a substitute for professional mental health care. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger or experiencing a crisis, please contact emergency services or a mental health crisis hotline. Additionally, encourage individuals at risk to seek help from mental health professionals for ongoing support and treatment.
